A rare set of three porcelain portrait plaques produced by the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (Germany) for the Berlin State Museums, capital of the GDR in the second half of the 20th century. Each medallion is crafted in fine white bisque porcelain, reflecting the renowned quality and tradition of Meissen’s artistry, dating back to the 18th century.
The medallions feature finely modeled relief portraits of:
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) – poet, thinker, and a key figure of German Romanticism.
Friedrich von Schiller (1759–1805) – influential dramatist and poet of German Classicism.
Princess Charlotte of Prussia (1798–1860) – a notable Prussian royal figure.
The reverse of each piece bears the inscription “Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Hauptstadt der DDR” (Berlin State Museums, capital of the GDR) together with Meissen’s iconic crossed swords mark in blue, certifying authenticity.
These porcelain medallions were created in limited series for cultural institutions, combining artistry with commemorative function. Today, they stand as valuable collector’s items, representing both the heritage of Meissen and the cultural history of East Germany.
