Apothecary jars have a long and fascinating history, dating back to ancient times when they were used to store herbs, spices, and medicinal preparations. In Europe, their use flourished during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, when ceramic and glass jars were carefully labeled and decorated to identify the remedies inside. By the 18th and 19th centuries, apothecary containers had become both functional and ornamental, often featuring elaborate motifs, coats of arms, or botanical illustrations. In the 20th century, decorative apothecary jars were sometimes produced for pharmacies, cosmetics companies, or as promotional pieces, combining traditional form with modern design. Today, they are prized not only for their historic utility but also as collectible decorative objects that reflect the evolution of medicine, craftsmanship, and design.
Flora Keramiek was one of the most recognizable Dutch ceramic manufacturers of the second half of the 20th century. The company was known for producing decorative vases, jars, and vessels adorned with colorful patterns often inspired by the majolica tradition. Flora also collaborated with pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies, creating special series of apothecary jars and promotional containers. Characteristic of their work were rich floral ornaments and vivid colors, which today make these pieces highly valued as both collectibles and decorative accents.
