Apothecary jars have a long and fascinating history, dating back to ancient times when they were used to store herbs, spices, and medicinal preparations. In Europe, their use flourished during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, when ceramic and glass jars were carefully labeled and decorated to identify the remedies inside. By the 18th and 19th centuries, apothecary containers had become both functional and ornamental, often featuring elaborate motifs, coats of arms, or botanical illustrations. In the 20th century, decorative apothecary jars were sometimes produced for pharmacies, cosmetics companies, or as promotional pieces, combining traditional form with modern design. Today, they are prized not only for their historic utility but also as collectible decorative objects that reflect the evolution of medicine, craftsmanship, and design.

Zenith Gouda was a well-known Dutch ceramics and pipe manufacturer based in Gouda, the Netherlands. Founded in the 18th century, the factory originally specialized in clay pipes, which were a significant local industry. In the early 20th century, Zenith expanded into decorative pottery, producing a wide range of hand-finished ceramics that often reflected the regional tradition of Delftware. Between the 1930s and 1980s, the company became especially recognized for its apothecary jars, decorative plates, and vases featuring colorful majolica-style floral motifs. Marked pieces from Zenith Gouda are valued today for their craftsmanship, historical character, and connection to the broader Dutch ceramic heritage.
